Sophia Janevic is a senior at the University of Michigan pursuing a dual degree in Musicology and American Culture with a minor in German. Her primary instrument is the violin, which she currently studies under Fabiola Kim. Former teachers include Andrew Jennings and Gabe Bolkosky. Her chamber and orchestral studies have included summer festivals such Bowdoin International Music Festival, Domaine Forget, and Marrowstone.
As a musicologist, Sophia’s main research interests are 20th-century American music and contemporary popular music, which she has explored through her work as an editorial assistant at the Gershwin Initiative and as a research fellow at Song of America. In both of these positions, Sophia sought to create widely accessible online resources on composers with marginalized identities.
Sophia is passionate about arts administration and currently serves as the co-president of the University Musical Society (UMS) Student Committee, where she carries out grassroot marketing campaigns to increase student engagement with the arts on campus and organizes events that showcase student performers. She is also the social media manager for the University of Michigan Carillon Guild, and worked as an intern for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
In September of 2022, Sophia started studying the carillon under the direction of Tiffany Ng and Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra. She enjoys arranging music for the bells and organizing trips with the guild to visit carillons around North America.
