Biography

Louis Lohraseb

Louis Lohraseb is a rising young conductor whose recent performances of both opera and symphonic work have garnered praise from Opera News, The Wall Street Journal and The Berkshire Review. Born to Iranian and Italian parents, he is currently the assistant conductor to the Los Angeles Opera, where his conducting appearances for the 2019/20 season included Off Grand performances of Psycho at the Theatre at Ace Hotel and was to culminate in his mainstage debut leading the March 14 performance of Roberto Devereux.* In Feburary of 2019, he made his professional conducting debut at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, where he will return in September 2020. He joined the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program in 2018 after previously serving as assistant conductor for LA Opera's 2017 production of Nabucco. In May 2018, he assisted Teatro Dell'Opera di Roma’s production of Billy Budd. He is a student of the late Lorin Maazel and of James Conlon, whom he previously assisted at the 2014 Ravinia Festival in the productions of Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro. He was selected as the 2016 Conducting Fellow at the Chautauqua Music Festival, where he conducted and assisted in both operatic and symphonic literature. For the summer of 2018, he was an assistant conductor at the Glimmerglass Festival for The Barber of Seville and West Side Story. Currently a doctoral candidate at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, he has studied under distinguished conductors Arthur Fagen, David Effron, and Kevin Murphy, and served as assistant conductor and opera coach for the IU Opera Theater.
