Asa Ambrose

Asa Ambrose is a rising lyric baritone based in Houston, Texas.

His operatic roles span both classic and contemporary works, including Samuel (cover) in The Pirates of Penzance, Bardolfo in Verdi’s Falstaff, the Rich Young Ruler in Shores’ The Son of Man, and Evan Mack’s Yeltsin! In Texas. Ambrose's stage experience also includes performing scenes from The Magic Flute (Papageno), The Gondoliers (Giuseppe), Così fan tutte (Guglielmo), Candide (Candide, Maximilian), and Fidelio (Jaquino). In musical theatre, he has performed as LeFou in Beauty and the Beast, the Announcer in Loserville, and in the chorus of The Music Man.

His performances have taken him to renowned venues, including The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the New World Center in Miami, and Houston's Wortham Center and Hobby Center for Performing Arts.

In spring 2025, he performed a solo recital of American Art Song for Vision Possible Charity Concerts (March 2025) and sang as a chorister with Houston Grand Opera in Wagner's Tannhäuser (2025). Summer 2025, he joined OPERA San Antonio-Classical Music Institute as a studio artist, performing solo and scene repertoire throughout the San Antonio area, culminating in performances at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

Upcoming engagements for Houston Grand Opera’s 2025-26 Season include Il Trittico by Puccini, Silent Night by Puts, and The Messiah by Händel arr. Mozart.

Ambrose is an alumnus of esteemed programs including Schmidt Vocal Arts, YoungArts Week, YoungArts Miami, and the Washington National Opera Voice Institute. In these programs, he has worked with renowned artists including Jamie Barton, India Carney, Jason Ferrante, Margo Garrett, Mary Henderson-Stuckey, Stanford Olsen, Richard Stilwell, and Cindy C. Oxberry. He is a recipient of accolades from the TEXOMA National Association of Teachers of Singing Auditions and National YoungArts..

Ambrose holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Texas Christian University, with prior studies at Baylor University. His vocal training includes mentorship from Daniel Belcher, Dr. Robert Best, J. David Brock, Dr. Melody Rich, and W. Stephen Smith. He has also coached with Tyson Deaton, Mark Metcalf, Andreea Muţ, and Bethany Self.

Beyond performing, Asa is a dedicated voice teacher. He believes in fostering a studio environment that focuses on the development of the whole artist. He believes that “Beautiful singing is just that, now we have to teach the human behind the voice.” His teaching philosophy emphasizes curiosity, generosity, and compassion, creating a nurturing environment that empowers singers to explore their full potential.

Asa currently lives in Houston’s inner loop with his husband, Nathan, and their Shiba Inu puppy, Cinnamon!
