In demand as a performer and music advocate, bassoonist Avery Dabe is currently the second bassoonist of the New Mexico Philharmonic. A dedicated orchestral musician, he has recently performed with the Utah Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, Opera Southwest, and the Syracuse Orchestra. He was formerly bassoon faculty at the Eastman Community Music School in Rochester, New York.
During the summer months, Avery has performed in some of the country's leading music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, Deer Valley Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, and the Brevard Music Center. Several unexpected forays into opera have led Avery to play principal bassoon in recent full scale productions of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Puccini's Madame Butterfly, Verdi's Rigoletto, and Sondheim's Sweeny Todd.
Avery is the designer and caretaker of Heckeldex©, a website regarded as the world’s most comprehensive database of Heckel bassoons. Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Avery is a first-generation musician who began learning bassoon with no prior musical training. His major teachers are George Sakakeeny, and Mike Harley. In his free time, Avery enjoys writing and drinking tea.
