David Kahng is a bass-baritone from Cheonan, South Korea. In the 2026 season, he joins Opera North as a Resident Artist, performing Alidoro in La Cenerentola and 4th Dandy in The Ballad of Baby Doe. He is also a Young Artist at the Accademia Verdiana.
In 2025, David was a Fellow at the Music Academy of the West, where he performed Commendatore and Leporello in Don Giovanni, as well as Chucho in William Bolcom’s Lucrezia. He previously appeared as Shiro Azuma in When the Purple Mountains Burn at Houston Grand Opera. A former Studio Artist with Wolf Trap Opera, he performed Barone Douphol in La Traviata at the Filene Center and covered Elder Ott in Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah. Additional engagements include Gianni Schicchi with On Site Opera.
His repertoire further includes Melisso in Handel’s Alcina, Howard in Missy Mazzoli’s The Listeners, Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, and Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte.
A prizewinner of the 2026 National Opera Association Artist Division Competition, David received both First Prize and the Todd Duncan Legacy Award. He was also awarded an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition and is a recipient of a scholarship from the Henry W. Bull Foundation.
David completed his Master of Music and Professional Studies Diploma at the Mannes School of Music, studying under William Burden and Joshua Greene, and holds a Bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University.
