Didi Cooper has been stunning audiences with her rich, velvety mezzo-soprano voice and engaging stage presence as she plays in various roles ranging from Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray to the love struck young page Cherubino from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. This year she has had the privilege of working with Kentucky Opera as an apprentice artist, performing in Madama Butterfly by Gioachino Rossini, Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, and the Louisville premier of Chandler Carter’s This Little Light of Mine. In the spring of 2025, Didi starred in the opera Rapture by David Wolfson which was conducted by Kimcherie Lloyd at the University of Louisville. This summer she has performed as the title role in Carmen and as Sarah’s Friend in Ragtime the Musical for the Bay View Music Festival.
Throughout her lifetime, Didi has had the privilege of establishing an extensive repertoire ranging from RnB, Gospel, Musical Theater and Classical music. During the 2023 summer season, she debuted at the Bay View Music Festival in the operas Gianni Schicchi as “Zita” and Suor Angelica as “La Zia Principessa” which were conducted by Dr. Everett McCorvey and Dr. Casey Robards. She has also performed in the musical, Beauty and the Beast under the direction and choreography of Justin Lucero. She also had the privilege to take lessons from mezzo-soprano Élise Des Champs and participated in a masterclass held by the Grammy Award Winning baritone, Kenneth Overton.
Didi attended Eastern Michigan University where she studied under Dr. MeeAe Nam and received a Bachelor of Music Arts degree in 2023. At EMU she has performed as “Mama Bear” in Goldi and the Three Singing Bears, the spirited “Lady Terrencia” in Captain Lovelock and “Dater #5” & “Dater #9” in Speed Dating Tonight! with the school’s Opera Theatre Program. She has also performed works by John Rosamond Johnson, Leslie Adams, Hugo Wolf and Manuel de Falla in concert.
As an advanced competitor, Didi has been a finalist in several competitions, most notably placing 1st in her division at the Mid-South Region National Student Auditions (NATS) and the EMU Barry Manilow Competition, 2nd in the George Shirley Vocal Competition and recognized for best artistic interpretation of compositions by female composers in the Women Composer’s Prize
Didi holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Louisville where she studied under the instruction of Dr. Katherine Donner.
