Joseph Canuto Leon

Praised for his "Outstanding singing" and "big, bass-ish baritone" by the Dallas Morning News, Joseph Canuto Leon is a Mexican-American baritone based in the DFW Metroplex. Originally from Des Moines IA, Joseph began his career with contracts from The Dallas Opera, American Baroque Opera, Charlottesville Opera, Opera on the James, Opera in the Rock, AVA Russian Opera Workshop, Opera in Concert, and Diversitά Opera. Some of his recent role debuts include the titular role in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Belcore in Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, The Father in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, Baron Zeta in Lehar's The Merry Widow, Polyphemus in Handel's Acis and Galatea, and Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff.  2023 sees him return to American Baroque Opera Company in his role debut in Handel's Rodelinda as Garibaldo, as well as studying covering Donner in The Dallas Opera's new production of Das Rheingold while returning as Belcore in their english language production of The Elixir of Love. He is a student of Michael Chioldi and graduated with a MM in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas and a BM in Music Education from Iowa State University, and received further training as a Young Artist with The Dallas Opera, Tyler Young Artist with Opera on the James, and an Ader Emerging Artist with Charlottesville Opera
