Joseph was born with an insatiable drive to play the piano. Once he was tall enough to reach the keyboard, he went at it until his parents had no choice but to procure adequate training. After a few years of public school, Joseph noticed that he would be routinely pulled out of class to provide music for rehearsals and assemblies. Who wouldn’t milk that for all it’s worth? By the time he finished elementary school, Joseph had played cello in the orchestra, and trumpet in the band, and he sang in the choir.
In middle school, he began to notice the difference between the sound of a piano playing music and an orchestra playing the same music. This started a lifetime passion for orchestration that inspired him to procure a degree in commercial arranging from the Berklee College of Music. After graduation, Joseph pursued choral studies at Westminster Choir College, harmony at Juilliard School, and contemporary commercial music at Shenandoah University.
From piano recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall to swinging standards at the Village Gate, Joseph’s career has cut a wide path across various musical genres. He has done musical theatre with The Player’s Circle, Unity Theatre, A Quarter to 9ine Productions, The Rockaway Theatre Company, Sexy Dirt Productions, the French Woods Festival for the Performing Arts, The Heights Players, and Faison Firehouse Theater. Mr. Roberts can be heard on several CD projects including "The Jazz Hymnal," “Purpose to Destiny” and “Savior.” He was the featured pianist in the VPUMC recital, “Extemporaneous Creativity.”
Joseph Roberts is currently the Minister of Music at the Fenimore Street United Methodist Church, Collaborative Pianist at the Young People’s Chorus of NYC, and pianist at Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church. He remains active as an accompanist, arranger, and choral director.
