Biography

(She/Her) A South Korean native, Koeun Grace Lee, holds a D.M.A. in Piano Performance and Post-Master’s Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, an M.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, and a B.M. in Piano and Piano Pedagogy and Artist Diploma from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Her album, Variations on a Theme by Stefan Wolpe and Other Selected Piano Works, was recently released through Navona records.

Biography

Koeun Grace Lee

A South Korean native, Koeun Grace Lee, is an avid performer, educator, and conference presenter. She holds a D.M.A. in Piano Performance and Post-Master’s Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, an M.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, and a B.M. in Piano and Piano Pedagogy and Artist Diploma from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Her doctoral dissertation was “Isang Yun’s Musical Bilingualism: Serial Technique and Korean Elements in Fünf Stücke für Klavier (1958) and His Later Piano Works.”

Her album premiering Variations on a Theme by Stefan Wolpe by Robert Gross, along with piano works by Jean Ahn and David Burge, was recently released via Navona records (2023). She has been an active presenter at the Composition in Asia International Symposium and Festival at the University of South Florida. She has performed at New Music Chicago Presents Concert, Roosevelt University, the University of South Florida, Kansas State University, Furman University, and many other venues. Her performance of Folksong Revisited, a solo piano work of Korean composer Jean Ahn, was featured in Music in Chicago of WFMT in 2021 and 2023. Dr. Lee has presented numerous lectures and performances at the College Music Society conferences in the U.S. and South Korea.

Dr. Lee is an active member of New Music Chicago and serves on the piano faculty at Mattix Music Studio. She recently has been selected as a recipient of the 2022 Steinway Top Teacher Award. Dr. Lee served on the faculty at several institutions, including Brevard College, Mars Hill University, and Summer Piano Camps of the University of North Carolina at Asheville and Greensboro. She is a member of the College Music Society, Music Teachers National Association, and Suzuki Association of the Americas.
