As a bespoken fellow, I was mentored by co-founder Gina Izzo. She guided me as I brainstormed ideas for my up-and-coming nonprofit organization, Latinas in Jazz, which will highlight and tell stories of Latin women in the Jazz industry. This organization will also preserve the history of Latin Jazz and provide funding for new works, grants, and scholarships.

Jazz Festival Coordinator Intern

This experience taught me the ins and outs of running the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival before constructing the UNC campus commons. In addition, I shadowed and aided the Jazz Festival Coordinator Amy Murphy in her day-to-day tasks learning and assisting with the following functions: • Arranging travel - Book/support festival clinicians, school directors, and artists with international and domestic travel reservations, including hotel, flight, car services, and meals/entertainment • Track budget and expenses - Submit all business expenses to the internal system for reimbursement, process, external invoices, track department spending against pre-approval budget • Calendar management - including setting up meetings or events, booking space(s), working with the University of Northern Colorado and City of Greeley partners on any facilities support, responding to incoming scheduling requests • Festival Schedule coordination - Developed festival schedule and inputted details into Sched.com for festival attendees to be able to build their personalized festival schedule. On Sched.com, Attendees were able to view event details and who would be in attendance • File organization - manage contract approvals, organize physical and digital documents and files • Review and approval of artists' contracts and riders and communication with concert venues in adherence to the University of Northern Colorado policies and Union Colony Civic Center policy • Catering and Hospitality • Customer Service • Vendor Relationships • Sponsorship. Karen Gonzalez

Karen is a vocalist, teacher, activist, and entrepreneur from Colorado Springs, CO. Karen obtained her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Music Business with a Jazz Studies emphasis and an Arts Entrepreneurship Certificate Class of 2019. In addition, Karen recently received her Master of Arts in Arts Management and Entrepreneurship from The New School Class of 2021. Karen’s work revolves around creating equitable and inclusive spaces for underrepresented performing and visual artists. As a musician, Karen specializes in Jazz and contemporary music. In addition, she teaches private voice to students ranging from ages 5-50. Karen recently made her debut as a freelance musician in this summer’s Mostly Mozart Festival, singing Mozart’s Requiem with the Unsung Collective and Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Tyrone Clinton and Louis Langrée. She looks forward to seeking out more opportunities in NYC. As an Entrepreneur, Karen is a self-taught graphic designer who offers her brand identity, website design, and illustration services.
