Biography

Meryl Dominguez

Meryl Dominguez, praised for her “intensity and warm tone” (Bachtrack) and “gorgeous, crystalline highs and a powerful mid-range” (Arts Knoxville) most recently made her international debut as the title character in Norma with Musica Viva Hong Kong, and is currently a member of the Houston Grand Opera Studio program. A graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts, Music Academy of the West, Santa Fe Opera’s apprentice program, and other elite training institutions, she has performed roles such as Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor) Violetta (La Traviata), Juliette (Roméo et Juliette), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus) and Adina (L'elisir d'amore). Enjoying success in the competition sphere, she was a finalist with Houston Grand Opera’s prestigious Eleanor McCollum Competition, a National Semi-Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, First prize winner at Vero Beach Opera’s inaugural Rising Stars competition, a Career Development grantee with the Sullivan Foundation, an Encouragement Award winner with The Gerda Lissner Foundation, as well as a two time Audience Favorite winner in AVA’s Giargiari Competition. This summer she is a part of the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown NY, covering Angostura LaBelle, in playwright Ken Ludwig’s new Rossini jukebox opera Tenor Overboard, as well as singing Sister Margaretta in Francesca Zambello’s new production of The Sound of Music. Included with her passion for the operatic repertoire, is an enthusiasm for art song, and contemporary music. Debut concert work includes a recital with LyricFest on a premiere of John Musto’s set Be Music, Night as well as a set of miniatures to poetry of Blok, written by Dina Pruzhanzky with Bare Opera. Additional recitals have featured Lili Boulanger’s clairières dans le ciel, Debussy’s fêtes galantes II, Strauss’ Brentano Lieder, Britten folk songs, Poulenc’s fiançailles pour rire, Rachmaninov op.38, Wolf’s Spanischesliederbuch and selections from Musto’s Penelope (2005). Upcoming concerts include a collaboration with harpist Parker Ramsay presenting a multifaceted recital, spanning poetic genres and cultures. As a Double Degree graduate from Oberlin College and Conservatory, she also has a bachelor’s degree in Dance, concentrating on the narrative and storytelling aspects of movement. She also loves to bake complicated pastries, learn new skills, play with her rescue dog, and travel.
