Biography

Rebecca Sacks

With performances deemed “whimsical” (Eugene Register Guard) and “simply excellent” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), Rebecca Sacks, mezzo-soprano, is known for her dynamic stage presence, smart musicality, and stylistic versatility.

In Summer 2022, joined  the Miami Music Festival’s prestigious Wagner Institute where she made her role debut as Fricka in Das Rheingold. Following that, she joined Boheme Opera New Jersey for a role and company debut as The Mother in Hansel and Gretel in their opening production of the 2022-2023 season.

This season, she will additionally join Chicago Opera Theater to cover Nancy and Mrs. Herring in Albert Herring. As well as make a role debut as Sara in Roberto Devereux in a concert production in New York City.

The 2021-2022 season saw Ms. Sacks join Philadelphia Opera on Tap as The Witch in their production of Hansel and Gretel. She additionally covered Baba in Baltimore Concert Opera’s reopening production of The Medium and joined Wilmington Concert Opera as Second Witch in a digital production of Dido and Aeneas.

In the 2020-2021 season, audiences saw her as the Waitress in Michael Ching’s Speed Dating Tonight with Fargo-Moorhead Opera. She was additionally looking forward to singing Mamma Lucia and covering Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana before cancellations due to COVID-19. 

Ms. Sacks has trained with the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices’ American Wagner Project where she studied the roles of Fricka (Die Walküre) and Venus (Tannhäuser).  In the 2019-2020 season she had her role debut as Queen Alkmene in Pittsburgh Festival Opera’s production of Strauss’ Die Liebe Der Danae where she was praised for “engaging” and “tuneful” performance (George B. Parous/ PGH in the Round). Also at Pittsburgh Festival Opera, she made her Wagnerian debut as a member of Jane Eaglen’s Mastersingers Program for Young Dramatic Voices, singing the role of Grimgerde in The Valkyrie and performing scenes from Tristan und Isolde as Brangäne. 

Sacks’s other recent season highlights include Komponist (Ariadne auf Naxos) with the Miami Music Festival, Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) with Wilmington Concert Opera, Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) with Portland Opera to Go, and Dorabella (Così fan tutte) with the Astoria Music Festival

A champion of new music, she has premiered concert works and operas with University of Oregon’s Composer’s Symposium and the Tai Hei Ensemble in Eugene, Oregon. 

Ms. Sacks’ concert repertoire has included Händel’s Messiah with the Bravo Chorale, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Ping & Woof Opera, Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Choral Guild of Atlanta, and Monteverdi’s Vespri della Beata Vergine of 1610 with the Stanford University Singers

She has received awards from the American Prize in Opera, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Orpheus Competition, Opera Connecticut, and the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Awards.

Ms. Sacks currently resides in Philadelphia with her beloved cat, Katarzyna, and holds degrees from University of Georgia and Stanford University.
