Biography

OperaWire has praised her “vocal power,” “enchanting voice,” and “velvety mezzo-soprano.” She won The American Prizein (2020); performed roles with Caramoor, Teatro Nuovo, the Rossini Opera Festival, Sarasota Opera, Teatro Grattacielo, New Amsterdam Opera, and Fargo-Moorhead Opera; and performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall. This year, she premiered roles by Roger Neill, Neil Cohen, Nathan Felix, Amy Scurria, Jeff Shankley, Jane K, Germaine Shames, and Arnold Saltzman.

Madison Marie McIntosh

“Sparkling” mezzo-soprano Madison Marie McIntosh has been praised for her “wondrously flexible voice,” “prodigious vocal skills,” and “richly textured and strong lower register” (Voce di Meche). OperaWire has praised her “vocal power,” “enchanting voice,” “velvety mezzo-soprano,” and “abundant vocal and dramatic technique, with no shortage of soaring high notes and flexible roulades.” She returned to Carnegie Hall in June 2023, this time to Stern Auditorium, as the mezzo-soprano soloist in Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living. Madison won The American Prize in Vocal Performance in 2020 and has performed Ernesta (Un avvertimento ai gelosi) at Caramoor, Delia (Il viaggio a Reims) with the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Beppe (L’amico Fritz) with Teatro Grattacielo at the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice, and other roles nationally and internationally. This year, she will perform in Florida Grand Opera’s concert Zarzuela por el mundo, reprise the role of Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with Camerata New Jersey, and perform in Eve Queler’s annual Bel Canto Opera Concert for the third time.

In 2023, Madison sang La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi) with Opera on the James, Maffio Orsini (Lucrezia Borgia) with New Amsterdam Opera, Suzy and Lolette (La rondine) with Opera on the James, Adalgisa in scenes from Norma with Maryland Opera, Waltraute in a scene from Götterdämmerung with TUNDI Productions, and Irina in the world premiere of The Prodigal Daughter (an opera by composers including Patricio Molina and Harrison Sheckler). She also performed in Lauren Flanigan’s Comfort Ye for the second consecutive year. In 2022, she reprised the title role in La Cenerentolawith Fargo Moorhead Opera; reprised the title role in Giulio Cesare in Egitto with Connecticut Lyric Opera; and premiered the roles of Francesca Da Ponte (Da Ponte, by Roger Neill and Neil Cohen), Hernán Cortés (La Malinche, by Nathan Felix), Claire (Bomb Squad Rhapsody, by Jane Kozhevnikova and Germaine Shames), Young Woman (A Severed Chord, by Amy Scurria and Jeff Shankley), Spatz (No. 5, by Nathan Felix), and Margaret Dunlop Gibson and Rachel (Geniza: Hidden Fragments, by Arnold Saltzman).

Madison has also performed the title role in Carmen, Isabella (L’Italiana in Algeri), Hansel (Hansel and Gretel),Ruggiero (Alcina), Dido (Dido and Aeneas), Sara (Roberto Devereux), Giovanna Seymour (Anna Bolena), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Melissa (La liberazione di Ruggiero), and principal roles in the world premieres of twelve operas. In 2019, she performed the role of Prinz Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus) at the Wiener Kammeroper as a result of winning First Prize in the Vienna Summer Music Festival Competition. She worked with the late Mo. Alberto Zedda as a young artist of the Accademia Rossiniana in 2014, was an Apprentice Artist of Sarasota Opera in 2018, and was a Resident Artist of Will Crutchfield’s Teatro Nuovo in 2018.

In 2020, she sang in digital events presented by organizations such as Fort Worth Opera, the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and Teatro Nuovo. She performed one of the 22 ariette by Vaccai in Will Crutchfield’s video “Bel Canto in Thirty Minutes,” which also included singers such as Lawrence Brownlee, Jennifer Rowley, Lisette Oropesa, Angela Meade, Tamara Mumford, and Michael Spyres. She performed a digital benefit concert for The American Prize that featured the world premieres of works by eight composers, and she collaborated with Mo. Eve Queler on the digital premiere of Theodore Christman’s opera The Impresario and the Dueling Divas.
