Biography

Marissa Moultrie

Soprano Marissa Moultrie is an active performer of opera, oratorio, and art song. Most recently, Marissa performed Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi in Morelia Mexico with Jorge Parodi and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Michoacán. During the 2021-2022 season, Marissa was an Apprentice Artist at Palm Beach Opera, where she sang the roles of Olga (The Merry Widow) and the Spirit (Dido & Aeneas). Additionally, Marissa covered the role of Gianetta (L’elisir d’amore). The beginning of the season included a workshop of Missy Mazzoli’s The Listeners, where Marissa had the pleasure of singing the title role of Claire Devon with Missy and Maestro Steven Osgood. She also sang excerpts of Mimì for the Seattle Opera Guild in October 2021. In 2021-2022, Marissa was also a finalist in the prestigious Camerata Bardi International Competition, a winner of the General Directors award in the James Toland Competition, and received her fourth Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. Marissa was named a Semi-Finalist in the James Toland Competition in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Marissa was also awarded an Encouragement Award in the Washington District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in the 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons. In 2021-2022, Marissa competed in the Florida District of the competition. Marissa won 1st place in the Angela Meade Vocal Competition in 2019, and has been a semi-finalist in the Pasadena Vocal Competition and Palm Springs Opera Guild Competition. Marissa has been in the formal training programs at Palm Beach Opera, the International Summer Opera Festival of Morelia, The Eurasia Festival, and the Russian Opera Workshop, among others. Marissa made her New York City debut in January 2020, reprising the title role in Suor Angelica. Marissa also reprised the role of the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro in the summer of 2021 in Morelia Mexico with Jorge Parodi and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Michoacán. She also performed excerpts of the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier in a gala streamed throughout Michoacán. Marissa’s roles have included Donna Elvira & Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Tatyana (Eugene Onegin), Countess Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), the title role in Rusalka (Dvořák), Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Dido (Dido & Aeneas), Minerva (Orpheus in the Underworld), and Cai Yan in Gregory Youtz’s opera Fiery Jade, which was premiered at Pacific Lutheran University in 2016. Marissa has studied or performed excerpts of Micaëla (Carmen), Mimí (Boheme), Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier), and Fiordiligi (Cosí Fan Tutte). A supporter of new compositions, Marissa’s repertoire includes Voice II in Steve Reich’s Tehillim, as well as the title role of Gregory Youtz’s Fiery Jade: Cai Yan. Marissa also performed and workshopped Claire Devon in Missy Mizzoli’s The Listeners, which is commissioned by the Norwegian State Opera, Opera Philadelphia, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. In addition to opera, Marissa is an accomplished singer in oratorio, choral, and concert works. In the recent recording of Latvian Composer Eriks Ešenvalds released in 2020 on Signum Records, Marissa’s solo in Evening was regarded as a “glowing, harmonic melting pot” by Gramophone UK. Her repertoire also includes the soprano solos in Handel’s Dixit Dominus, Randol Alan Bass’s Christmas Flourish, Holst’s Christmas Day, and Bach’s Wachet Auf. Marissa has performed the soprano solos in Haydn’s Kleine Orgelmesse, Andrieseen’s Miroir de Peine, and Haydn’s Creation, among others. Marissa holds a Masters's degree from Mannes School of Music, a Bachelor of Music from Pacific Lutheran University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Pacific Lutheran University. Marissa is a Registered Yoga Teacher, and when not singing or practicing yoga, she is the CEO of Manhattan Grant Writers, a grant writing agency in NYC.
