Marika Yasuda
(She/Her) Pianist Marika Yasuda is a versatile young artist and sought-after collaborator who has performed throughout the United States in a wide array of solo, collaborative, chamber music, and orchestral concerts. A native of Williamsburg, Virginia, she joined San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellowship Program in 2022 as Pianist/ Vocal Coach, and is a Doctoral candidate in Collaborative Piano at Indiana University under the guidance of Kevin Murphy and Anne Epperson.

Biography

Marika Yasuda

Marika Yasuda is recent graduate of San Francisco Opera's Adler Fellowship Program as pianist and vocal coach. She joined the music staff at San Francisco Opera on productions of Bright Sheng's Dream of the Red Chamber, Verdi's La Traviata, Gabriela Frank's El último sueño de Frida y Diego, and L'Elisir d'Amore by Gaetano Donizetti. This season, she will return to SFO for Poul Ruder's The Handmaid's Tale, and can also be found on music staff at Palm Beach Opera, New Orleans Opera, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Recent SFO engagements include performances of La Bohème throughout the Bay area as part Bohème Out of the Box, a song recital in the 2023 Schwabacher Recital Series, and a performance of Szymanowski's Mythes Op.30 at the Dianne and Tad Taube Atrium Theater with SFO concertmaster Kay Stern. She has also performed recitals and orchestral concerts at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Seiji Ozawa Hall, Green Music Center, Bennett Gordon Hall, and Taube Atrium Theater among others.

Marika is a Doctoral candidate in Collaborative Piano at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music under the mentorship of Kevin Murphy and Anne Epperson. There, she frequently served as coach accompanist for the Indiana University Opera Theater (IUOT). Some productions include Barber of Seville, La Bohème, Gianni Schicchi, West Side Story, and the recent coproduction of Mason Bates’ opera The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs with Santa Fe, Seattle, and San Francisco Operas.

As a soloist, Marika has received top prizes at competitions including the Hellam Young Artists’ Competition, Virginia Waring International Piano Competition, Julia Crane International Piano Competition. She was named a winner of the 2015 Oberlin Conservatory Concerto Competition where she performed Samuel Barber's Piano Concerto.  As a collaborative pianist, Marika maintains an active schedule working with vocalists and instrumentalists.  She has performed in Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Seiji Ozawa Hall, Herbst Theatre, Taube Atrium Theater, and Bennett Gordon Hall among others with ensembles such as eighth blackbird, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, and the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble and orchestras. Some past engagements include the world premier of Michael Gandolfi’s In America (2018) for voices and orchestra at Tanglewood, an all-cello program at Concerts at Bradley Hills, and concerts at the Boulanger Initiative’s Woco Launch Fest in Washington D.C. and Middlebury Song Fest in Vermont.  

Marika has held fellowships at numerous festivals including the prestigious Merola Opera Program, Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, Tanglewood Music Center, SongFest at Colburn, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Gijon International Piano Festival.  She also served as music director at the 2019 Finger Lakes Opera’s young artist program, and has collaborated with opera companies and institutions such as Houston Grand Opera, Madison Opera, and Yale University in the recording of several digital concert series and virtual projects during the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic. 

Marika holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Vocal Accompaniment from Oberlin Conservatory (2015), and a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the Jacobs School of Music (2017).
