Abi Middaugh attends the University of Michigan under the instruction of Amy Porter, and performs with the Symphony Band and University Philharmonia Orchestra at the School of Music, Theater, and Dance.
In 2022, Abi performed with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America on their European tour under Maestro Daniel Harding, with guest cellist Alisa Weilerstein. Abi played principal flute of Interlochen Arts Camp's World Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2021, and has also performed with the Eastern Michigan University Wind Symphony. Notable conductors include Jayce Ogren, Michael Haithcock, JoAnn Falletta, Kenneth Kiesler, Cristian Măcelaru, Christian Reif, and James Ross.
As a soloist, Abi performed with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra in November of 2022 after winning their 2021 Young Artist Competition. She has also won first place in the 2020 Washtenaw Community Concert Band Concerto Competition and 2021 North Dakota State University National Music Performance Competition. Abi has performed in masterclasses for Marianne Gedigian (2022), Kelly Zimba (2022), Terri Sánchez (2022), Linda Chesis (2021), Judith Mendenhall (2021), Nancy Stagnitta (2021), Helen Blackburn (2021), Jeff Zook (2021), and Sharon Sparrow (2020).
Other mentors include Matthew Roitstein of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Hannah Hammel of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, David DiGiaccobe at the College of New Jersey, and Kelly McDermott, her former teacher whom she studied with for fifteen years prior to college.
Recent new music projects include a premiere of Ryan Lindveit’s Bass Clarinet Concerto written for Andrew Koeppe of the Akropolis Reed Quintet (2023), and the premiere recording of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “The Atonement” (2023).
Abi plays a Muramatsu DS flute and a Zentner piccolo. She is from Ypsilanti, Michigan, and also enjoys exercise, photography, thrift shopping, meditating, and spending time with her parents and younger sibling.
