Praised for a voice of ‘incredible shimmer and blade,’ British tenor Adam Smith is heralded for his full lyric sound and striking stage presence.  In the 2021-22 season, Adam will make debuts at La Monnaie de Munt in Brussels as both Luigi and Rinuccio in a new Tobias Krazer production of Puccini’s Il Trittico, at Glyndebourne as Florestan in a new production of Beethoven’s Fidelio, at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as Don José in Bizet’s Carmen, and at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo in Bogotá, Colombia as Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca.  In recent seasons he performed the title role of Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann in a new production by Vincent Huguet under the baton of Marc Minkowski at Opéra national de Bordeaux, Rodolfo in Puccini’s La bohème at Opera Carolina, and Don José in Carmen at Seattle Opera.  Other highlights include the Prince in Dvořák’s Rusalka with Opéra de Limoges, Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca with Austin Opera, Duca di Mantova in Verdi’s Rigoletto at Scottish National Opera, and Carmen with Tulsa Opera. Adam Smith has worked with a distinguished list of conductors and directors including Calixto Bieito, Mariame Clément, Alexander Joel, Daniel Kramer, Cornelius Meister, Sir Jonathan Miller, Tomaš Netopil, Giacomo Sagripanti, and Alberto Zedda amongst many others.   From 2014-2017 Adam was a member of the ensemble at Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp. During his time there he performed a diverse collection of roles including Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Cassio in Verdi’s Otello and the Indian Tenor in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko. Prizes include First Prize, Audience Prize, Critics’ Prize, and the prize for The Best Tenor at the 2015 Ferruccio Tagliavini International Singing Competition in Austria. In the same year he won Third Prize in the Ada Sari International Singing Competition in Poland and in 2016 he was a finalist in the International Moniuszko Vocal Competition. Adam appears regularly in concert and Oratorio, highlights of which include Handel’s Messiah and Samson, Haydn’s The Seasons, Lord Nelson Mass, Harmoniemesse, and Stabat Mater, Hummel’s Mass in E-flat, Frigyes Hidas’ Requiem, Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solonelle, Bruckner’s Te Deum, and Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise and Elijah, Janáček’s The Diary of One Who Vanished and Liszt’s Three Petrarch Sonnets.  Born in the UK, Adam studied the violin from the age of four, graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music with a first-class honors degree.  He then completed his Master of Music degree with Distinction from the International Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
