An alum of the prestigious Merola Opera Program, Alex DeSocio is described by The New York Times as having a “buttery, booming baritone". Recent engagements include Marcello in La bohème with Opera Birmingham, Silvio in Pagliacci with Opera Memphis, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore with Sarasota Opera, Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette with Pensacola Opera, and Morales in Carmen with Vero Beach Opera. ​ Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia is a signature role for him, having sung it with Anchorage Opera, Opera Roanoke, Livermore Valley Opera, Mobile Opera, and Opera Colorado’s young artist program. Further professional role experience includes the title role in Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Dandini in La Cenerentola, Michele in Il Tabarro, Schaunard in La bohème, Lescaut in Manon, Le Dancaïre in Carmen, Ramiro in L’heure espangnole, Melchoir in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Man with the Shoe Kit in Postcard from Morocco. Mr. DeSocio has been featured extensively with American opera companies including Fort Worth Opera, Pensacola Opera, Wichita Grand Opera, Amarillo Opera, Opera Fort Collins, Castleton Festival, Opera Santa Barbara, and the Pacific Opera Project. During his tenure as a resident artist with Pittsburgh Opera, Mr. DeSocio was seen as Montano in Otello, Le commissaire in Orphée, Father in Paul’s Case, and Second Priest in The Magic Flute. A highly awarded artist, Mr. DeSocio is a two-time semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, winner/laureate in the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, Sullivan Foundation winner, Eleanor McCollum Competition finalist, 1st place winner of the Palm Springs Opera Guild and Opera Birmingham Vocal competitions, 2nd place Premiere Vocal Competition winner, and Merola Opera Program Shoshana Grant Award recipient. Mr. DeSocio received his BM in Vocal Performance from Northwestern University and his MM at the University of Maryland with the Maryland Opera Studio under the tutelage of Leon Major and Dominic Cossa. He is also the only opera singer certified as an Actor Combatant in The Society of American Fight Directors.
