The Big Swim celebrates Lunar New Year with a witty, heartwarming one-act opera sure to delight families and opera lovers alike! In this retelling of the Jade Emperor and the Great Race — a fable that sets the order of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac calendar — the animals learn to put aside fierce competition to instead care for and support one another, side by side.
Commissioned by Houston Grand Opera in partnership with Asia Society Texas, The Big Swim fuses diverse influences into a single, compelling story, intentionally crossing boundaries between traditional and modern, Eastern and Western, and classical and non-classical. The work will be presented at Asia Society Texas as part of its Lunar New Year festivities and will be preceded by activities, including shadow puppets, calligraphy demonstrations, and an original children's dance piece "The Giant Serpent" by Nao Kusuzaki celebrating the Year of the Snake.
Korean American mezzo-soprano Alice Chung is recognized for her "operatic tonal glamour" (Parterre). Ms. Chung's 2024-2025 season includes the role debuts of Amneris (Aida) with Boston Lyric Opera, Dinah (Trouble in Tahiti) with Annapolis Opera, the title role of Carmen with Hawai'i Opera Theatre, and Mother (Fearless) with Opera Delaware in the 2024-2025 season. She will also be joining the Modesto Symphony for her first Verdi Requiem this spring.
As a 2017 and 2019 alumnus of the prestigious Merola Opera Program, California-native Ms. Chung has garnered acclaim with the San Francisco audience through her excerpted portrayals of Azucena (Il trovatore), Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana), Augusta Tabor (The Ballad of Baby Doe), and Gertrude (Hamlet). Since then, Ms. Chung has returned to San Francisco, presenting her Schwabacher Debut Recital, Shoshana Foundation recital, covering at San Francisco Opera, a Liederabend with Lieder Alive!

Zachary Society Competition, and the National Vocal Competition by the Young Patronesses of the Opera. She has also won awards through the Gerda Lissner Lieder/Song Competition, Opera Index, Mildred Miller International Voice Competition, Orpheus Vocal Competition, Pasadena Opera Guild, Chautauqua Opera Guild, the Metropolitan National Council Auditions.
During her time offstage, Ms. Chung works with Wear Yellow Proudly as the artistic director and co-founder. In response to the spike in xenophobia during the Covid-19 pandemic, Wear Yellow Proudly was founded as an arts and advocacy initiative devoted to bringing awareness to Asian culture by showcasing and celebrating Asian art and artists worldwide.
