Biography

Alicia Woodberry

Soprano Alicia Woodberry has been acclaimed for causing “the magic to appear” (OperaGene), thanks to a compelling artistry that resonates long after each performance. This season Alicia took center stage as Mimì in La bohème with Shakespeare Opera Theatre in December 2024, adding Puccini’s beloved heroine to her growing list of roles and earning several glowing reviews. Her first collaboration with Shakespeare Opera Theatre was in 2023 when she portrayed the formidable Gertrude in Hansel and Gretel. She then spent the summer of 2024 on a high note as a Young Artist with Cedar Rapids Opera, performing the delightfully comedic role of Miss Titmouse in Edwin Penhorwood’s Too Many Sopranos and as Adina in scenes of L’elisir d’amore.

Alicia’s talents have also found a new stage with the Cathedral Choral Society, where she has lent her voice to iconic works like Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Brahms’ Requiem, and Smyth’s Mass in D, all this season. Additionally, Alicia has taken on exciting projects with composer Garth Baxter, including a concert of Garth Baxter's art songs, followed by a commission to record 12 of his pieces, showcasing her versatility and commitment to contemporary music.

Her accolades are as impressive as her stage presence: in 2023, she secured 2nd place at the NATS Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition and has been a semi-finalist in the Classical Singer and Premiere Opera Foundation competitions. She also competed in the Giulio Gari Competition this year. In 2022, Alicia joined the rosters of Annapolis Opera and Maryland Lyric Opera, and made her film debut in the opera Lily by Garth Baxter.

Throughout her career, Alicia has captivated audiences at festivals and companies across the globe, including the Miami Music Festival, Bel Canto in Tuscany, Young Artists of America, and Vancouver International Song Institute. Other roles include the enchanting First Lady in Die Zauberflöte (Alexandria Summer Nights), Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi (Genesius Guild), and Nannetta in Falstaff (Bel Canto in Tuscany), among others.

In addition to her performing career, Alicia is a passionate educator. With over a decade of experience, she nurtures the next generation of musicians at Opal Music Studio in Old Town Alexandria, VA. She tailors her lessons with care, shaping her students’ musical journeys based on their unique goals and abilities. Many of her students have gone on to shine in lead roles.

Alicia holds a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where she studied under the esteemed Tony Arnold and earned accolades such as the Peabody Talent Award and the George Castelle Memorial Award. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Augustana College. She lives and performs in Washington, DC, where she studies with renowned soprano Elizabeth Daniels.
