Biography

Annabelle Kern

Shiny silver and crystal clear: a young soprano with such brightness and precision. Her naturally warm, radiant voice has been encouraged since childhood. Always curious, open-hearted and motivated, she searches for new sounds and colors in music. Her extensive repertoire as a lyric soprano includes roles such as Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), Despina (Cosi fan tutte), Snegurochka (Rimsky-Korsakov), Ännchen (Der Freischütz) and songs from Mozart, Schubert to Poulenc, Rachmaninov and Mussorgsky. Born in Frankfurt am Main/Germany in 1999 and raised in Zurich/Switzerland, Annabelle Kern started taking singing lessons with Edith Akçag in her choir "Golden Voices" at the age of five. With the choir, they recorded two CDs on which she can be heard both as part of the ensemble and as a soloist. Also at the age of five she had her first piano lessons with Bianca Medici at the Zurich Conservatory of Classical Music and Jazz. In 2013, she began attending the Kantonsschule Stadelhofen in Zurich, with a concentration in music, and graduated with the Matura in summer 2017. During these four years, she studied voice primarily with Martina Fausch. In addition to numerous students’ concerts, Annabelle Kern was also a soloist in her high school’s chamber music choir and their main choir. From 2017 to 2019, she attended the Pre-College MKZ, studying voice with Marcus Niedermeyr and taking piano lessons with Silvia Unger at the Zurich Conservatory of Music. Since October 2019 she has been studying for her Bachelor degree in Voice/Opera with Prof. Carola Höhn at the Berlin University of the Arts. Annabelle Kern was a prizewinner at the "Swiss Youth Music Competition" in 2013 (regional 2nd prize), 2014 (regional 2nd prize), and 2015 (regional 3rd prize). In 2018, she was a finalist in the “Elvirissima” competition of the Elvira Lüthi Wegmann Foundation, and a finalist in the Classical Music Encouragement Award of the Zurich Conservatory Music School. Master classes with Prof. Ulrike Sonntag and Thomas Seyboldt have complemented her education.
