Biography

Aviva Fortunata

Canadian-Italian soprano Aviva Fortunata is earning international attention with her “velvety timbre” and voice “of diva soprano quality and strength”. To great acclaim, she stepped in last-minute as the title role of Norma at The Dallas Opera, securing the bel canto heroine as one of Ms. Fortunata’s signature roles. Rescheduled upcoming engagements see her as Donna Anna in POV’s upcoming production of Don Giovanni (TBD), and as Hanna Glawari in Calgary Opera’s The Merry Widow (2022). In the 2019/20 season, Ms. Fortunata took her Norma to Calgary Opera in a triumphant company debut. She headlined Il trittico at Pacific Opera Victoria as Giorgetta in Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Nella in Gianni Schicchi. At Deutsche Oper Berlin, she sang in Die Zauberflöte (First Lady), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Berta), and Nabucco (Anna). Her return to DOB was cut short by COVID-19. Recent highlights include a step-in as Third Norn/Gutrune in the Götterdämmerung at the Canadian Opera Company, Leonore in Fidelio with Pacific Opera Victoria, and Tosca with Opera on the Avalon. Ms. Fortunata is an alumna of the COC Ensemble Studio (2013-2016), where she took the mainstage as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, and Helmwige in Die Walküre. She covered Anna (Maometto II), Alice Ford (Falstaff), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), and Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes). As a member of San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program (2012-2013), she sang Lady with a Cake Box (Postcard from Morocco). Ms. Fortunata was a finalist at Operalia (2016) and BBC Cardiff Singer of the World (2015 Song Finals).
