Baian Chen
(He/Him) *Baian Chen, countertenor, studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston. He has sung Orfeo (Orfeo ed Euridice), Bradamante (Alcina), Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), the Spirit (Dido and Aeneas), Tolomeo (Giulio Cesare, Vienna), and Polinesso (Ariodante, Germany). Recent concerts include performances in Mainz and Kiedrich of Bach and Scarlatti cantatas. This season he debuts as the Refugee in Dove’s Flight with NEC Graduate Opera and continues to appear in NEC productions and recitals.

Biography

Baian Chen

Baian Chen, countertenor, studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston. His operatic repertoire includes Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice, Bradamante in Alcina, Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the Spirit in Dido and Aeneas. He recently appeared as Tolomeo in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Vienna and as Polinesso in Ariodante in Germany.

In August 2025, Chen performed in a series of concerts at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz’s Roter Saal and at the City Hall of Kiedrich, featuring Baroque cantatas by Bach and Scarlatti. His previous concert work includes Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms in Boston’s Brown Hall, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater in London, and international recital appearances such as the SOA Concerto di Musica da Camera in Italy, as well as the NEC Song & Verse and Liederabend series.

Specializing in Baroque and early music, Chen will make his upcoming debut with the NEC Graduate Opera Department as an undergraduate student, singing the role of the Refugee in Jonathan Dove’s Flight. He will also appear in additional NEC opera productions and recital series throughout the season. Dedicated to early repertoire, Chen seeks to bring authenticity and expressive depth to Baroque and Classical music while engaging modern audiences in its timeless power.
