Biography

Bethany Vaughan

Bethany Vaughan is a freelance trumpet player and educator currently residing in Chicago, IL. A native of Houston, TX, at eight years old Bethany fell in love with the cornet, later switching to trumpet and attending Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (while studying with former Principal Trumpet of the Houston Symphony, James Austin). Bethany then spent four years completing a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance with a minor in Environmental and Sustainability Studies at Indiana University Bloomington, where she studied modern trumpet with John Rommel and baroque trumpet with Kris Kwapis. While at IU, she was principal trumpet of the Concert Orchestra, a finalist in the brass concerto competition, was named a fellow at the Texas Music Festival (2019) and the Round Top Festival Institue (2020, 2021), and can be heard with the IU Wind Ensemble on an album of Beethoven chamber music recorded on the Naxos label. Bethany has experience in many styles of music: she played in many opera pit orchestras while at IU and was a member of Mariachi Perle del Medio Oeste, the IU Brass Band, and Latin fusion band Matixando. After graduating from IU in 2021, Bethany received a full scholarship to pursue her masters degree at Northwestern University, where she studied with Michael Sachs (Principal Trumpet- the Cleveland Orchestra), Thomas Rolfs (Principal Trumpet- the Boston Symphony) and David Bilger (recently retired Principal Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra) before graduating in 2023. At NU, she was section leader of both the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Symphony Orchestra. She is also a member of Talos Brass, which was named a finalist in the Music Teachers National Association 2023 National Chamber Music Competition. In the summer of 2022, Bethany was a trumpet fellow in the Conducting Academy Orchestra at the Aspen Music Festival and School, and she also performed at the Bravo! Vail festival. She has performed with the Chicago Symphony OrchestraHouston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Blossom Festival Band, and she is a substitute trumpet for the New World Symphony and the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. Bethany also loves to teach and is the trumpet coach at Niles West High School in Skokie, IL as well as maintaining a private studio. Send her a message if you're interested in lessons or a masterclass! In her free time, Bethany loves to read, run, and play her Switch.
