Description
For the second consecutive year, I have the pleasure of working with the brilliant dancers of DC Next, teaching and choreographing a new dance work that will debut this year!
About DC Next:
DC NEXT Summer Choreographic Intensive gives students essential career building skills by immersing them in the world of professional dance, both onstage and backstage. Students are selected to participate in DC NEXT based on their enthusiasm, focus and desire to learn about the dance profession.
In addition to dance classes with instructors from across the country, DC NEXT focuses on daily workshops and coaching in leadership development, goal setting, college and career placement, branding as an artist (*resumes, headshots, etc.), choreography/composition, and team building. Students are tasked with producing a performance and marketing it to the community. Through their workgroups in Event Planning, Media Relations, Design and Social Media Marketing, students create a budget, delegate tasks, design the playbill, create a marketing plan to sell tickets, choreograph and perform!
What better way to introduce work ethic, build leadership capabilities, inspire creativity, and open young minds than to give teens a theater and tell them to produce a show!

Biography
Billy James Hawkains III (Detroit, MI) is a performer, choreographer, and Lecturer of Dance at Kennesaw State University where he teaches Choreography, Improvisation, Safety Release Technique, Dance Entrepreneurship, and serves as Chair of the Dance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. He holds an MFA in Dance Choreography from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a BFA in Dance Performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Billy has had the privilege of training under and performing works by Duane Cyrus (Theatre of Movement) and serving as his Rehearsal Assistant for numerous works, most notably, Colony of Desire, a commission for Charlotte Ballet in North Carolina. Alongside his collaboration with Theatre of Movement, Billy has performed works by Marquita Sams, Juel D. Lane, Veronica Silk, Julio Medina, Elizabeth “B.J.” Sullivan, Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, and Doug Varone. Since moving to Georgia, Billy has taught at various studios including Atlanta Dance Connection & Center for Dance, Vincent Anthony Academy of Dance, and Fleet Studios to name a few. He was also named the first Community Engagement Coordinator for DanceATL. As a choreographer, Billy collaborates with creatives under the mantle of his collective, The Third Collective, and examines his own Blackness, Black Culture, and the Christian faith to generate relevant and provoking works of art. His dance creations have been presented at the Zuckerman Museum, Chattanooga Dance Theatre, Salvation Army Camp Keystone Florida, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Underground Atlanta, and the Ferst Center for the Arts. Billy is a two-time resident choreographer for DC Next, a summer dance program for emerging artists under the mantle of Dance Canvas in Atlanta, GA. When he’s not dancing, choreographing, or teaching, Billy enjoys reading books, listening to podcasts, traveling with close friends and family, and creating faith-based videos with the sole purpose of healing and restoring joy back into the lives of others!
