Calvin Tjosaas
(he/they) I'm Cal, a queer, multidisciplinary movement artist and dance educator based in California. My creative process is rooted in collaboration, experimentation, and community-building, and draws on my own personal movement style as well as the creative impulses of my dancers/co-collaborators. I favor non-narrative structures, letting ideas evolve naturally through the development of a new work. Dances vary in theme but lean into the playful and avant-garde.

I am actively seeking collaborators from all disciplines--especially lighting designers, videographers, and composers/producers. Don't hesitate to reach out!

Biography

Calvin Tjosaas

Though not always a dancer, Calvin has found joy in movement for as long as he can remember. As a high school student he stumbled into ballet, first as a supplement to his color guard training and then eventually as a passion in its own right. Since then, his personal movement practice has expanded to encompass a diverse range of modalities and styles, from modern dance to Lindy Hop to vogue. He has worked with choreographers such as Darryl Thomas (Pilobolus, Rainbow Dance Theatre) and Jay Carlon (Dance Magazine's 25 to Watch), produced work for the stage and screen, and continues to serve the dance community as a technique instructor and strength coach.

Calvin completed his undergraduate studies at Cal Poly Humboldt in 2023, earning a dual-degree in Interdisciplinary Dance Studies and Kinesiology. He was recognized by the College of Arts & Humanities for Excellence in Visual and Performing Arts, and by dance program faculty for Excellence in Choreography, Excellence in Performance, and Exceptional Contributions to the Dance Studies Program. He will be attending the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at North Central College beginning in January 2024. Calvin looks forward to expanding his expertise as both an artist and clinician in order to creatively engage with and support dancers at every stage of their career.
