Native to Greenville, SC, baritone Charles Sanderson is currently pursuing a B.M. in Vocal Performance at Furman University ('26). Charles has performed with several programs, including Furman University's Sarah Reese Lyric Theatre ('22-'26), SongFest ('24), and Seagle Festival ('25).
Charles is a native of Greenville, South Carolina, and is currently pursuing a B.M. in Vocal Performance at Furman University, studying under the guidance of his teacher, Dr. Grant Knox, and coach, Hailey Anthum Hunter. He is honored to be a Presidential Music Scholar at Furman and is an active performer on- and off-campus as a member of the Furman Choral department, including as a member of the barbershop quartet The Mosquitoes and as President of the flagship choir, Furman Singers.
Charles is a frequent member of the Sarah Reese Lyric Theatre, having performed as Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors and David in A Hand of Bridge in the prior season, while also performing in Orpheus in the Underworld and The Pirates of Penzance with the company in prior seasons. He has performed and covered baritone solos in masterworks with the Furman Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir, including “For Behold…The People That Walked in Darkness,” "Thus Saith the Lord," and "Who May Abide" in Handel’s Messiah, as well as the baritone solos in Aaron Copland’s The Promise of Living and John Ireland’s Greater Love Hath No Man. He has also had the honor to sing "Mache dich, mein Herze, rein" (St. Matthew's Passion) on the Chamber Choir's annual Palm and Passion service with the University Organist, Dr. Charles Tompkins. With Furman’s choral department, Charles has performed in places such as the Salzburg Cathedral, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and St. Peter’s Church in Vienna, Austria.
This past summer, Charles attended the Seagle Festival in Schroon Lake, NY, where he performed in every mainstage show, including Carmen, Anything Goes, The Pirates of Penzance, and Mayo Buckner, including roles such as the Purser (Anything Goes) and Leader of the Indigent Marchers (Mayo Buckner). At the same time, Charles was performing the roles of Monkey King, Crocodile, and Lady Tiger in Kamala Sankaram’s Monkey and Francine in the City of Tigers, which toured the North Country for a total of eight performances across community venues and schools.
Charles has placed in several competitions, including NATS Classical Division National Auditions, in which he has placed at the Regional level, and the Classical Singer Competition, in which he placed as a semi-finalist in the Undergraduate division.
Charles is actively involved in academics, currently serving as a Recording Engineer and Teaching Assistant in Music Theory on campus. In his free time, Charles volunteers at church on the production and worship teams, reads, plays his viola, and plays with his dog, Eleanor Rigby.
