Biography

Christina Campanella

Christina Campanella is a composer, vocalist and sound artist who creates music and sound-based works across disciplines. Her pieces for theater, film, installation and playback blend songwriting and composition with aural design, weaving found sounds, ambient textures, and a dreamy avant-rock sensibility into cinematic soundscapes and deconstructed art songs. Recent work includes: THE VISITATION, a sound walk commissioned by HERE Arts Center (Jackie Robinson Park), ALL THINGS FROM ZERO (concert-installation), commissioned by The Great Learning Orchestra with funds from the Swedish Cultural Council (Royal Academy of Fine Art, Stockholm, world premiere); FIND ME (12:1 sound installation), commissioned by Harvestworks, presented by HERE Arts Center (NYC); NO WAKE (live cine-concert), for the GLO at Fylkingen (Stockholm); LIGHTHOUSE 40°N, 73°W (headphone installation), commissioned by Harvestworks for the New York Electronic Art Festival, Governors Island (NYC), also presented by HERE in Culturemart; PARTS ARE EXTRA (experimental cinema), collaboration with filmmaker Peter Norrman, commissioned by NYSCA and presented at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, HERE and Fylkingen; BREATHE (sound installation), collaboration with Arthur Ganson’s sculpture Machine with Breath, Museum at MIT (Cambridge); THE SECRET LIVES OF COATS (music-theater) with writer Stephanie Fleischmann, produced by Red Eye Theater (Minneapolis) and Whitman College (Walla Walla); RED FLY BLUE BOTTLE (opera-theater), also with Ms. Fleischmann, commissioned and developed through the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP), presented at HERE (NYC), EMPAC (Troy), Noorderzon (Groningen), EXIT Festival (Paris). As a vocalist/performer, Campanella has worked with a constellation of artists in downtown theater and independent film since 1998, including Richard Foreman, Theodora Skipitares, David Greenspan, Phil Soltanoff, Jim Findlay, and Mallory Catlett. She has played keyboards and accordion with various New York bands, and frequently performs the operas of composer/visual artist Joe Diebes. She is a three-time recipient of NYSCA Individual Artist Commission in Film, Media and New Technologies, as well as support from the NY State Music Fund, American Music Center, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and holds a BA in Music and Theater from Bennington College.
