Biography

Curtis Sellers

Curtis Sellers is driven, passionate, and green. When he began playing the oboe at age 10, choosing the “scholarship” instrument with a sound he loved, he could never have imagined where it would take him.

Events like acceptance into the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and Preparatory Program, studies with musicians in the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and teaching his own private studio starting in high school changed his perspective from that of an aspiring band director to an orchestral- and chamber-focused musician and teacher.

In recent years he has studied at CU Boulder with well-known recording artist and orchestral musician, Peter Cooper and at Arizona State University with the highly regarded pedagogue, Martin Schuring. Between the two degrees he has also received a certificate in music entrepreneurship and worked as a teaching assistant and principal band librarian.

He currently substitutes for orchestras in the Phoenix metropolitan area including the West Valley Symphony Orchestra, Symphony of the Southwest, and ProMusica Arizona. He is one of the founders of Opuntia Winds, a graduate wind quintet consisting of students from ASU who perform for the school of music, local schools, and the residents of nearby retirement homes.

When he's not holding an oboe, a reed knife, a score, or a pencil, Curtis likes to spend time with loved ones and friends, whether it be hiking, cooking, working out, playing volleyball, or watching movies.
