Biography

Cynthia Phillippi

Violist Cynthia Phillippi is a passionate artist, having found her first love of music particularly in chamber music, working with members of the Juilliard, Orion, Shanghai, and Guarneri Quartets. Her love for chamber music deepened during summers at Aspen, where she participated in the David Finckel and Wu Han chamber music studio, and Kneisel Hall, and since then, she has become a strong believer of supporting living composers. Cynthia toured as a part of a quintet to premier a new work by Bright Sheng, and has premiered numerous new chamber music pieces by composers such as Emily Cooley and Andrew Moses.

Artists from whom Cynthia has gleaned a wealth of musical knowledge include Pam Frank, Ed Gazouleas, Antoine Tamestit, and Mia Chung, to name a few. Her years at the Curtis Institute of Music, studying viola with Roberto Díaz and Hsin-Yun Huang, shaped how she approaches sound and expression in both solo and collaborative settings.

One of Cynthia's favorite activities is reading chamber music with friends. Otherwise, you can usually find her exploring cooking and baking, hiking, painting, and growing in her relationship with God individually and in community.
