From Muscat, Oman, Mezzo-Soprano Deepa Johnny has been gaining recognition in major competitions and festivals on the operatic scene. Most recently, Deepa made her role debut as Meg Page in Falstaff alongside Bryn Terfel in the title role at the Aspen Music Festival, followed by her debut as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro at Opera San Jose. She is a recipient of the 2022 Andre Bourbeau Best Canadian Artist award and the ICI Musique People’s Choice award.

Biography

Deepa Johnny

Born in Muscat, Oman, Mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny has been quickly gaining recognition in major competitions and festivals on the operatic scene. Most recently, Deepa made her role debut as Meg Page in Falstaff alongside Bryn Terfel in the title role at the Aspen Music Festival, followed by her debut as Cherubino in an all new production of Le Nozze di Figaro at Opera San Jose. Deepa’s 2022 season featured her Carnegie Hall debut at SongStudio in January as well as singing Suzuki in a concertized version of Madame Butterfly with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra guest conducted by Jun Märkl. Deepa is one of the newest members of LA Opera’s prestigious Domingo-Colburn Stein’s Young Artist Program for the 2022-2023 season, where she will make her debut in a new opera by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels, Omar, as Owen’s daughter. Deepa was recently honoured with the Andre Bourbeau Best Canadian Artist award and the ICI Musique People’s Choice award at the Concours Musical International de Montreal competition. A recent graduate of Indiana University, Deepa was chosen as a winner in the Western Canada District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2020. In her 2019-2020 season, Johnny sang the role of Rosina in IU Opera Theatre’s production of Il Barbiere di Sivilgia, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi and Carmen in Arden Opera’s production of The Tragedy of Carmen.  In 2021,  Deepa made her debut with IU Opera Theatre’s production of Handel’s Xerses singing the title role, Serse and Poppea in L’incoronazione di Poppea. During the summer of 2021, Deepa was invited to join 14 other singers from around the country at the world renowned Ravinia Steans Vocal Institute as a fellow presenting art song repertoire. In winter of 2021, Deepa made her West Virginia Symphony Orchestra debut with the Sounds of the Seasons concerts, guest conducted by Luke Frazier from the American Pops Orchestra.  With a passion to give back to her community, Deepa has partnered with A Better World Canada to raise money for local projects and fundraisers associated with education reform.
