Biography

Dominic Law

Double bassist Dominic Law is enjoying a multi-faceted career as a soloist, collaborative musician, and teacher. He has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Musicus Soloists, and Hong Kong Sinfonietta. He also performed in a collaboration concert at the BBC Proms 2019 between the Juilliard Orchestra and the Royal Academy of Music as principal bassist.

As a solo performer, Mr. Law seeks to incorporate elements of Chinese folk music and Western historical performance into his practice, and to expand the double bass repertoire by transcribing pieces written for other instruments and commissioning composers to write for the bass. His love affair with historical performance began with Baroque bass lessons with Doug Balliett and viola da gamba lessons with Sarah Cunningham, leading to performances with the Juilliard Gamba Consort. Mr. Law recently performed his own transcription of The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto, as well as a recital program consisting of compositions by J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Brahms in different period tuning systems.

Mr. Law is an avid advocate for contemporary music and seeks to incorporate elements from genres outside of the classical canon in his collaborative projects. He is featured in the inaugural performance of Juilliard’s The New Series, a series of interdisciplinary collaborations between musicians, dancers, and actors of the school. He has also performed with the Johnston Brothers, an Australian guitar duo that mixes their repertoire with music from Australia, Spain, Latin America, world music, and jazz-influenced works.

As a teacher, Mr. Law aims to inspire his students to become the best versions of themselves. He is currently a Teaching Fellow for the Music History, Music Theory and Analysis departments at Juilliard. He was also the Double Bass Fellow for the Juilliard Music Advancement Program (MAP), a Saturday conservatory-style program for students coming from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in classical music.

Mr. Law is a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellow at The Juilliard School, where he is studying with Joseph Conyers. He also completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Juilliard under the tutelage of Timothy Cobb, Hal Robinson, and Rex Surany. Summer festival appearances include Aspen, Schleswig-Holstein, Sarasota, WaBass Institute, and the Taiwan Connection Festival. Mr. Law has received grants and awards from the Bei Shan Tang Foundation, Irene Diamond Graduate Fund and the Bernard van Zuiden Music Fund. In 2019 Mr. Law received a prestigious award from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund that includes two years of full tuition scholarship. In his spare time, Mr. Law enjoys watching soccer (football) and exploring Cantonese restaurants in New York City.
