Dominik Belavy

Dominik’s recent highlights include debuts with Santa Fe Opera for the world premiere of Augusta Read Thomas and Leslie Denton-Downer’s Sweet Potato Kicks the Sun and with Opera Holland Park, L’Opéra Royal de Versailles and the Joye! in Aiken Festival in the title role of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Avi Stein and Juilliard415. This season, Dominik appeared with Beth Morrison Projects in 21c Liederabend: Op. Senses at National Sawdust and made multiple appearances on the Bach Vespers series at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Later, he returns to Tanglewood to sing Gaveston/Stranger in the American-premiere of George Benjamin’s Lessons in Love and Violence and travels to the Rome Chamber Music Festival for a program of American songs and arias with pianist Michael Barrett.  At The Juilliard School, he was featured as Thomas Bouché in Weill’s Down in the Valley, L’horloge Comtoise and L’arbre in Ravel’s L’enfant et les Sortilèges and Conte Perruchetto in Haydn’s La fedeltà premiata and covered Kuligin in Janáček’s Kàt’a Kabanovà, Nardo in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera and Presto in Poulenc’s Les mamelles des Tirésias. He recently made his hometown and professional debut as Jim Larkens in La faniculla del West at Michigan Opera Theatre. He then debuted as a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of St. Louis as Yakuside in Madame Butterfly and Constable and Trucker Joe in The Grapes of Wrath. Belavy spent numerous summers at the Tanglewood Music Center as a fellow and most recently returned as a guest to sing Junior in Leonard Bernstein’s A Quiet Place under the baton of Stefan Asbury and directed by Peter Kazaras. Other highlights at Tanglewood included Bach’s Nur jedem das Seine and Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen under the baton of John Harbison and Ravel’s Chansons madécasses. He  premiered selections from Alan Smith’s The Other Side of the Door and sang a portion of Schoenberg’s arrangement of Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. Mr. Belavy also joined Dawn Upshaw and Stephanie Blythe in the Centennial Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald curated by Lee Musiker with members of the Bostons Pops Orchestra. At Tanglewood’s Festival of Contemporary Music, he sang in the premiere of Nathan Davis’s The Sand Reckoner with Jacob Greenberg. On the recital stage, Dominik has been featured on the BBC Radio 3 - In Tune in Drums and Guns, a staged recital commemorating the Irish uprising of 1916 curated by Iain Burnside. He recently sang performances of Ben Moore’s Ode to a Nightingale with pianist Brian Zeger at National Sawdust and Alice Tully Hall and returned to Alice Tully Hall as the winner of Juilliard’s Vocal Arts Honors Recital where he sang an all-Schubert program. Other appearances include a recital at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall with Renée Fleming’s SongStudio and a performance of Virko Baley’s A Journey After Loves as a part of the Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival. Mr. Belavy was recently featured on WQXR’s Midday Masterpieces broadcast singing Debussy’s Le promenoir des deux amants. While at Juilliard, Dominik sang the title role in scenes Don Giovanni in a masterclass lead by Yannick Nézet-Séguin streamed on Medici.tv. He participated in masterclasses and residencies at Juilliard with Christian Gerhaher, Barbara Hannigan and Roger Vignoles. With Juilliard’s Lab Orchestra, Dominik workshopped John Adams’ The Wound-Dresser with the composer and sang selections of Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen at Alice Tully Hall. He was also featured in NYFOS@Juilliard’s celebration of John Corigliano and William Bolcom. With Juilliard415, Dominik has sung the B Minor Mass under the baton of Ton Koopman in New York and on tour through the Netherlands, the latter of which was filmed live at Grote Kerk, Den Haag for broadcast on TV-NPO cultura and has been heard at the Boston Early Music Festival and the Leipzig Bach Festival. Mr. Belavy completed his Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School as a Toulmin Scholar, where he also completed his Bachelor of Music degree. Dominik was a student of Sanford Sylvan.
