Biography

Eliza Boom

Eliza grew up on the stage, singing folk/gospel music with her parents and five siblings in churches across New Zealand. After learning piano and singing during school years, Eliza decided to make singing her career and completed a Bachelor of Music at Vision College (2014), focusing on classical singing while also developing versatility in musical theatre and contemporary music. Her training then took her to the University of Waikato, where she studied post-graduate qualifications under Dame Malvina Major (2016). Since beginning her study, she has won many awards at singing competitions across Australasia and the world. Early 2017 saw Eliza as a Dame Malvina Major Scholar with New Zealand Opera, performing in their productions of The Mikado, Don Pasquale, and Carmen. Later in 2017, Eliza moved to Manchester, England to study a Master of Music in Performance (Intensive) with soprano Mary Plazas at the Royal Northern College of Music. She then continued her study at the RNCM during 2018/19 on the college's elite International Artist Diploma. While at the RNCM, Eliza sang the roles of Nella (Gianni Schicchi), Gertrude (Hansel and Gretel), Noémie (Cendrillon), and covered the title role in Suor Angelica. In 2019/20, Eliza trained at the National Opera Studio in London, supported by the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, Drake Calleja Trust, and Tait Memorial Trust. During her time with the National Opera Studio, she performed operatic scenes in collaboration with Welsh National Opera and Opera North. When COVID-19 closed down theatres in March 2020, Eliza moved back to New Zealand for six months, during which time she performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and regularly with the Auckland Opera Studio. She also co-founded Reo Takurua Winterless Opera - an organisation formed to provide intimate operatic performances and a series of vocal masterclasses in Eliza's hometown of Whangarei. In September 2020, Eliza began working for the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, taking part in their Opera Studio training programme and performing roles on the mainstage, such as Woglinde (Das Rheingold), Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte) and Berta (Il Barbiere di Siviglia). Eliza has been involved in many prestigious training programmes, including the Les Azuriales Festival (2018), New Zealand Opera School (2013 - 2017), Lisa Gasteen National Opera School (2016) and was a member of the inaugural Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation Singer Development Programme (2016/17). These programmes have given her the opportunity to work with world-class teachers and performers, including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Kathryn Harries, César Ulloa, Peter Lockwood, Della Jones, Barbara Frittoli, Simon O'Neill, Lisa Gasteen, Richard Hetherington, and many more. Passionate about passing on knowledge and experience, during her years of tertiary study Eliza developed a teaching studio, teaching singing, piano and music theory to students of a variety of ages at home, schools and at Vision College.
