A recent graduate of the Juilliard Artist Diploma in Opera Studies, Erik now joins the Wiener Staatsoper for their 20/21 season.
Erik van Heyningen joins the Wiener Staatsoper as a member of their inaugural Studio in 20/21 for performances of Madama Butterfly, Rusalka, Les contes d'Hoffman, L'incoronazione di Poppea, and for his principle debut as "Der Anführer" in a new production of Henze's Das Verrattene Meer. Engagements in the 19/20 season include Guglielmo in Così fan tutte and Argante in Rinaldo at the Juilliard School. Concert appearances include performances of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Cecilia Chorus of New York. Erik is a proud recipient of a Novick Grant from the Juilliard School. Erik’s 2018/19 season included his debut at Carnegie Hall as the bass soloist in Mastervoice’s performance of Handel’s Israel in Egypt; Leporello in Don Giovanni at the Juilliard School, Fernando in La gazza ladra with Teatro Nuovo, and Jochanaan in Salome at the Spoleto Festival. In the summers of 2017 and 18, Erik joined the Santa Fe Opera as an Apprentice Artist, receiving the Donald Gramm Memorial award in 2017 and the Mackay family grant in 2018. In spring 2016, Mr. Van Heyningen was a Richard Gaddes Festival Artist with Opera Theater of St. Louis. Erik spent the previous two summers as a Gerdine Young Artist at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, where he received the Richman Memorial Award.
