Get swept up in a gothic romance this Valentine’s Day weekend! The Virginia premiere of Ben Stevenson’s Dracula is certain to enthrall audiences with its powerful choreography, haunting score, and spectacular production elements. A bold, dramatic ballet, Dracula takes the classic tale of the titular vampire and his brides to all new heights.
Erin Freeman serves as Guest Chorus Director for the Saint Louis Symphony's performance of Faure Requiem and Pavane. Conducted by SLSO Music Director, Stéphane Denève, this performance features soloists Erika Baikoff, soprano and Davóne Tines, bass-baritone.
Partnering with Hennessey Brown Music, Vox Anima London brings a festival choir of upper voices to Cadogan Hall, under the baton of Erin Freeman, to celebrate International Women's Day. The concert will feature Amies Freedom Choir - this incredible choir aims to develop the musical and cultural awareness of young women who have survived trafficking by exploring songs and musical styles from each others' cultures and languages. The evening will be opened by renowned ensemble The Queen's Six
It’s date night with City Choir! Join us for “Songs of Love, Loss & Connection” at your choice of venue: the exciting new arts complex east of the river, THEARC in Washington, DC on March 16; and Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center in Silver Spring, Maryland on March 17.
This romantic program, with string quintet and piano, will feature music by Roderick Williams, Johannes Brahms, Eric Whitacre, and Jake Runestad, topped off with Irish songs of love and loss.

On our final concert of the season, the City Choir of Washington celebrates our favorite art with “An Homage to Music.” Join us at Schlesinger Hall on June 2, 2024—Edward Elgar’s birthday—for an evening of music about music, featuring Elgar’s rarely-performed The Music Makers, with works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Reena Esmail, and Robert A. A true bucket-list trip for musicians, join us in historic Vienna where we’ll sing in the elegant Musikverein. Known for its acoustics as one of the world’s greatest concert halls, it is the home of the Vienna Philharmonic and site of the famous annual New Year’s concert.
To commemorate Bruckner’s 200th birthday, we’ll perform his monumental Te Deum for chorus and orchestra, which premiered in this very hall in 1886. The program also includes Schubert’s energetic Magnificat and Elgar’s heartfelt The Music Makers. Dr. Erin Freeman, Artistic Director of The City Choir of Washington and Director of Choral Activities at George Washington University conducts her fourth BCI week.
Enter a world of myth and magic as Prince Ivan, the thirteen princesses, and the Firebird battle the evil sorcerer Koschei. Ma Cong’s one-act Firebird, set to Stravinsky’s triumphant score, will make its East Coast premiere on the Carpenter Theatre stage this February. Featuring powerful choreography and striking costumes, sets, and lighting, Cong’s modern take on this classic folktale is not to be missed.
The perfect complement to the mystical Firebird, George Balanchine’s Serenade will open the program. Serenade, the first ballet Balanchine choreographed in the United States, marked a turning point in the history of American ballet. With one of the most iconic and breathtaking openings of any ballet, this ensemble work showcases the technique and musicality of neoclassical ballet at its best.
March brings a concert of music by GRAMMY-winning film composer Sharon Farber paired with the mournful-turned-triumphant Cantata BWV 21 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Although oceans and centuries apart, Farber and Bach both tap into the human need for hope in times of grave despair. Featuring a full orchestra and traditional Middle Eastern instruments, including Ney, Oud, Flamenco Guitar, and Doumbek.

The season rounds out with a celebration of American music old and new in June. To the set of Old American Songs by Aaron Copland, the City Choir of Washington will add commissions of “New American Songs” by D.C. Area composers, including Armando Bayolo, Jessica Krash, and City Choir’s own Robert Shafer.
From Beethoven’s contemporary Emilie Meyer to Wintergreen’s own Elisabeth Adkins and Erin Freeman, we honor the rich contributions that women have made to the music world. With a special performance of the beautiful Chorale for Strings by the late Ukrainian composer Hanna Havrylets and the sweepingly beautiful Barber Violin Concerto, this concert is as rich in historical interest as it is in artistic inspiration.

Butler’s powerful, impassioned Carmina Burana uses the full breadth of Carl Orff’s choral score to explore the melding of classical ballet’s structure with the earthiness of contemporary dance.

Begin your holiday celebrations early, with “Magnificent Bach” at the start of Thanksgiving week. Amid the historic environs and glorious acoustics of the Church of Epiphany, Artistic Director Erin Freeman will lead chorus, soloists, and orchestra in J.S. Bach’s Magnificat in E-flat. You will not want to miss Bach’s original version of his Magnificat (premiered in 1723) at its 300th anniversary, complete with the rarely performed four Christmas interpolations. The concert will open with a cappella works inspired by the Christmas interpolations.

Dreams come to life as Clara travels with the Nutcracker Prince to the magical kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. December marks the first revival of Artistic Director Stoner Winslett’s brand-new, much-loved production of The Nutcracker. With 17 performances in the grand Carpenter Theatre, there promises to be a magical Nutcracker moment for everyone!
Versatile, engaging, and spirited, conductor and artistic leader Erin Freeman serves in multiple positions throughout the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Virginia and maintains a national presence through guest conducting engagements. Freeman is Artistic Director of The City Choir of Washington, Artistic Director of Wintergreen Music, and Resident Conductor of the Richmond Ballet, the State Ballet of Virginia. She recently concluded successful tenures as Director of the award-winning Richmond Symphony Chorus and Director of Choral Activities at Virginia Commonwealth University. Guest conducting engagements include the Detroit Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra, South Carolina Philharmonic, Savannah Symphony, Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and additional ensembles in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, and Illinois. She has conducted at Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, La Madeleine in Paris, and the Kennedy Center, and has conducted and/or prepared the Richmond Symphony Chorus for multiple recordings, including the 2019 GRAMMY-nominated release of Mason Bates’ Children of Adam on the Reference Recording label. After a year of creating online experiences for multiple organizations and leading the 2021 in-person Wintergreen Music Festival, in 2021-2022, Freeman returned to the podium in engagements with the Virginia, Portland, Detroit, Williamsburg, and Richmond Symphony Orchestras, choral preparation for the Defiant Requiem Foundation, a performance of Faure’s Requiem in Carnegie Hall with Distinguished Concerts International New York, two productions with the Richmond Ballet, and the Richmond Symphony Chorus’ long-awaited 50th anniversary celebration, featuring Haydn’s The Creation. The 2022-2023 season brings appearances with the Detroit Symphony, the Savannah Philharmonic, the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra, two productions with the Richmond Ballet, multiple podium appearances at the Wintergreen Music Festival, and four performances with The City Choir of Washington. A recent finalist for Performance Today’s Classical Woman of the Year, Freeman has also been named one of Virginia Lawyers Weekly’s “50 Most Influential Women in Virginia” and an “Extraordinary Woman Leader” by the VCU School of Business. Freeman holds degrees from Northwestern University (BMus), Boston University (MM), and Peabody Conservatory (DMA).
