Evan Korbut is a Toronto-based Anishinaabe baritone, born in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. He began studying at Western University in 2007, completed his Bachelor’s degree in music (voice performance) in 2011, and completed his Master’s degree in music (voice) in 2014. Most recently, he was heard as the Owl in the premiere of Vancouver Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria’s production of Flight of the Hummingbird by Maxime Goulet. The tour of British Columbia was cut short by the Coronavirus; however, the production was filmed for a video release. Korbut is also a Dora winner as Simms/Spirit Chorus in Shanawdithit by Dean Bury, produced jointly by Tapestry and Opera on the Avalon. The Stuart Hamilton Memorial Award Winner starred as Jamie Paul in the World Premiere of The Ecstasy of Rita Joe for VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert, followed by the Canadian Premiere of Schubert’s Fierabras for the same company. Selected credits include productions of Strauss’ Die Fledermaus as Eisenstein, Lehar’s The Merry Widow as Danilo, Cosi Fan Tutte as Guglielmo, La Bohème as Marcello, The Rape of Lucretia as Tarquinius/Junius, Cenerentola as Dandini, Le nozze di Figaro as Figaro/Count Almaviva, L’Italiana in Algeri as Taddeo, La Clemenza di Tito as Publio, and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny as Moses. Upcoming this season, Evan joins Anchorage Opera for Wilde’s Missing.
