Biography

Fivemind Reeds

Fivemind Reeds is a Los Angeles-based reed quintet with saxophonist Alexander Lee, clarinetists Darren Liou and Kristine Llanderal, bassoonist Matthew Rasmussen, and oboist Thacher Schreiber.  Formed in 2021 at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, they have since performed in several concerts and recitals throughout Los Angeles and the United States. Fivemind was a featured ensemble at the 2022 Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival in New York City, and has premiered works by composers such as Rutgers University Professor Nadine Silverman, UCLA doctoral candidate Madeline Barrett, and Fivemind’s own Thacher Schreiber. Most recently, Fivemind was ensemble-in-residence for Interlochen Public Radio’s Sound Garden Project, planting classical music in unexpected places through innovative programming and performances. The quintet maintains a colorful and diverse repertoire, including works by David Biedenbender, Ton der Doest, Marc Mellits, Jeff Scott, and Octavio Vazquez.

Fivemind’s interests lie in bridging the gap between classical and contemporary music, and promoting diversity and equity in the arts through community engagement, expansion of the reed quintet’s repertoire, and revitalization of the age-old traditions of chamber music. In addition to their concert and recital performances, Fivemind’s commissioning and recording project, their 2023 Call for Scores, is one of many other ways they hope to exemplify a successful and mindful 21st-Century chamber ensemble.  Upcoming engagements include recording works selected from their 2023 Call for Scores, concertizing throughout the Los Angeles area, and returning to Northern Michigan for IPR’s Sound Garden Project.
