Hailing from Suffern, NY, baritone Gabriel Wernick is returning to the Teatro Regio in Torino in 2020-21 for his second season as an Amber Capital scholarship recipient. Some of his activities in Torino include: Sciarrone in Tosca, Le Dancaïre in Carmen, and il conte Robinson (Cover) in il matrimonio segreto. He was also selected as a young artist at the Teatro Carlo Felice in the 2020-21 season, in which he performed the role Dulcamara in the theater’s historic production of L’elisir d’amore. In 2019, after competing in As.Li.Co’s competition, Wernick was engaged as Belcore in a children’s production of l’elisir d’amore, i tuoi baci sono un filtro at the Teatro Sociale di Como in 2019. He could also be seen as Bartolo in a children’s production of il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatrodante in Campo Bisenzio. While in Italy, Wernick completed his graduate studies in Opera at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini under the tutelage of Professor Donatella Debolini. In 2019, he graduated cum laude. While at the conservatory, he could be seen as Bruschino il vecchio in il signor Bruschino, Simone and Marco in Gianni Schicchi, and il Conte in a semi-staged version of le nozze di Figaro. In 2018, he was an apprentice artist at Central City, marking his second summer as a young artist with Central City Opera. There, he performed Papageno in the Nina Odescalchi Kelly Family Matinee of die Zauberflöte. In 2017, he was invited to the Rossini in Wildbad summer festival as a young artist. At the festival he covered Parmenione in the mainstage production of l’occasione fa il ladro. He has partaken in many competitions throughout the years, winning prestigious awards such as the Amber Capital Scholarship (2019-20 and 2020-21), the Bonfils-Staton Apprenticeship (2018), First Place in the NATS Midwest Division Competition (2016, 2015, and 2013), and many others. Gabriel graduated from Northwestern University with Professor Theresa Brancaccio in 2016, where he obtained a BM in Vocal Performance and a BA in German Studies. He also studied abroad in Vienna, where he focused his studies on German, giving recitals and performance in Lieder throughout the year. During his tenure at Northwestern, he performed in various roles, such as Robin Oakapple in Ruddigore, David in A Hand of Bridge, and Bastianello the Elder in Bastianello.
