Thompson's operatic repertoire ranges from Baroque composers such as Conti, Cavalli, Graun, and Händel, through Mozart, J. Strauss, Janacek, Britten, and Ligetti. Also committed to expanding the countertenor repertoire through new works, Thompson has been seen in The Golden Ticket, an adaption of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Peter Ash, as well as the world premiere of Shell Shock, a commemoration for World War I composed by Nicholas Lens with a libretto by Nick Cave, both of which are commercially available on CD.
Thompson is a frequent collaborator with several of the world‘s leading conductors and directors. He has sung under the baton of Sir Charles Mackerras, Emmanuelle Haïm, Harry Bicket, Alan Curtis, Michael Boder, Josep Pons, Giuliano Carella, Christopher Moulds, and Donald Runnicles, as well as worked on productions by David McVicar, John Copley, Stephen Wadsworth, David Alden, Richard Jones, Robert Carsen, Kasper Holten, Jossi Wieler, Claus Guth, and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.
Gerald Thompson’s concert engagements comprise of oratorios and cantatas from Buxtehude, Telemann, Zelenka, Bach, Händel, Britten, and Bernstein. As alto soloist, he has performed with several orchestras and choirs throughout Germany, such as the Göttinger Barockorchester, Barockorchester l’arco Hannover, caterva musica Barockorchester in Westfalen, Kantorei St. Martin in Kassel, Nordhessische Kantorei, Kammerchor amici del canto, Kammerchor der TU Clausthal, and the Propsteikantatenchor Eiderstedt.
