Biography

Gina Hanzlik

Performing with an “aplomb rarely seen” (Le Devoir) and “a voice that is both brilliant in technique and deep in expressiveness” (Ludwig van Montreal) soprano Gina Hanzlik is known for her deep commitment to character and delivery. Equally interested in exploring traditional repertoire and new works, Gina has performed with Opera McGill, Tapestry Opera, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Michigan Opera Theater, McGill Symphony Orchestra, Société d'art vocal de Montréal, and regularly premiers work for various composers and chamber ensembles in the US and Canada. Opera credits include Musetta in La Boheme, Cunegonde in Candide, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Madame Herz in The Impresario, and Sister Rose in Dead Man Walking. Her concert repertoire ranges from the soprano soloist in Elijah, to Crumb’s Madrigal Books. Gina regularly presents educational recitals, as education and inclusivity are core elements of her artistic identity. Gina is a Teaching Artist with The Metropolitan Opera Guild and The Little Orchestra Society where she teaches music and character development to grades k-5 using opera as an instructional medium. Gina is a Teach for America Alumni and holds a Masters of Education in Urban Pedagogy from the University of Michigan, as well as music degrees from McGill University and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Recognized for excellence by McGill University, Gina was a finalist in the 2017 Wirth Vocal Prize and the recipient of the Dixie Ross-Neill Scholarship and Schulich Scholarship. She currently studies with Jennifer Rowley. Gina lives in Brooklyn, New York and does NOT miss the bitter cold winters of Minnesota where she was born and raised.
