Jamaican baritone Giovani Malcolm is a dynamic artist, activist, and storyteller whose work spans opera, recital, and arts advocacy. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Music in Voice Performance at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where he previously earned a Master of Music degree.
Malcolm's recent operatic credits include Gregorio in Roméo et Juliette, Trio in Trouble in Tahiti and Viacomte Cascada in The Merry Widow with IU Jacobs Opera Theater, Mr. Gobineau in Menotti’s The Medium with Bloomington Chamber Opera, Ned in Joplin’s Treemonisha, and Pictordu in Viardot’s Cendrillon. He has also appeared in the choruses of Don Giovanni and Candide, and made his operatic debut in 2022 as Pictordu with the University of Delaware Opera Theatre. Additional roles include Professor Bhaer in Little Women, Dr. Madden in Next to Normal, and the Monster/Water Gods Chorus in La liberazione di Ruggiero.
An accomplished competitor, Malcolm is the 2023 recipient of the Art Song Award at the George Shirley Vocal Competition. He was also a finalist at both the National Opera Association's Carolyn Aregento Voice Competition and the Florida Grand Opera Young Patronesses of the Arts Competition. He was honored with the Outstanding Senior Voice Award upon graduating from the University of Delaware.
Malcolm holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance and dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Music Management from the University of Delaware. As he continues to cultivate a multifaceted career, he remains dedicated to using his artistry as a vehicle for meaningful dialogue, representation, and change.
