Biography

Haewon Yang

Hailed as an “expressive, intelligent, and meticulous performer,” Dr. Haewon Yang is sought after for her flexibility across different genres and carefully studied interpretations of solo, chamber, and collaborative repertoire. She has won top awards and acknowledgements both for her performances and academic work from organizations like the Shean Music Competition, Music Teacher’s National Association, Indiana University Concerto Competition, the Canadian Music Competition, Indianapolis Matinee Musicale, and the Korean Canadian Scholarship Foundation.

Haewon’s programs are known to include the depth of the piano repertoire, from the familiar to the unknown. Working closely alongside composers, she has given several world premieres in the last few years and has presented many new works to audiences around the U.S. One of her passions is to bring new and under-represented composers into the spotlight through her performances.

As an active performer, Haewon has been invited to many venues across North America. Recent performances include the Southwest Arts Recital Series in Santa Fe, NM, the Tippecanoe Chamber Music Festival in West Lafayette, IN, and guest artist recitals at Purdue University, Butler University, Taylor University, Earlham College, Indiana University East, and Franklin College. Her recitals have been broadcast on WCTV in Wayne County, Indiana.

After getting a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Toronto, Haewon went on to complete graduate degrees from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She graduated with a Doctor of Music in Piano Performance and Literature, with a Minor in Music Education. Her doctoral research focused on the piano compositions of child composers, including the prodigious composer and pianist Emile Naoumoff. She attributes the entirety of her pianistic formation and musical training to her teachers Paulette Price, Marietta Orlov, and Arnaldo Cohen.

Alongside performing, Haewon has a heart for teaching, and has previously held positions as the Adjunct Professor of Piano at Indiana University East and as Associate Instructor of piano and Young Pianist Program faculty at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She is active in the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico, as the District Vice President. Haewon is currently faculty at the University of New Mexico – Los Alamos campus, while also performing, teaching, and adjudicating in Santa Fe and Los Alamos.
