South Korean soprano Hailey Hyein Ji is rapidly emerging as a distinctive voice in the international vocal scene, praised for her “warm and refined tone, supple legato, and keen sense of melodic phrasing” (ODB-Opéra). With a rare sensitivity to text and line, she continues to captivate audiences across operatic, recital, and concert stages.
Born in Korea and raised for part of her early childhood in Amsterdam, Ji was immersed in European languages and culture from a young age—an experience that helped shape her natural facility for languages and interpretive nuance, particularly in French and German art song.
She is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, studying with soprano Anya Fidelia. In April 2025, she gave her Artist Diploma Recital at Leshowitz Recital Hall, a performance praised as “a recital of rare finesse,” culminating in what one critic called “a vocal firework display” in Rossini’s Non si dà follia maggiore.
Ji holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Classical Voice from Seoul National University, where she graduated summa cum laude under the tutelage of soprano Mihae Park, and earned her Master of Music at the Manhattan School of Music with soprano Shirley Close.
Among her operatic highlights is her portrayal of Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart)—a landmark performance in her young career. Additional roles include Gretel in Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck), Pamina in Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte (Mozart), Zerlina in Don Giovanni (Mozart), Musetta in La bohème (Puccini), and Phébé in Castor et Pollux (Rameau). Her repertoire reveals a natural affinity for lyric and Baroque roles, as well as an expressive command of both comic and dramatic characters.
A committed recitalist, Ji has earned particular acclaim for her interpretation of art song. In her performances of Poulenc’s La courte paille and Strauss’s Brentano Lieder, she was lauded for her “deep musicality and sensitive imagination,” seamlessly shifting between humor, tenderness, and elegance.
Now based in the U.S. and active internationally, Hailey Hyein Ji continues to refine her craft with passion and poise, representing a new generation of technically superb, linguistically agile, and emotionally resonant artists ready to make their mark on the world’s leading stages.
