Hans-Derek Yu is a 21-year-old pianist from Bloomington, Indiana. He is currently a student of Distinguished Professor of Piano Arnaldo Cohen at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

Hans has been a prizewinner of multiple international piano competitions. He was the First Prize winner of the Osaka International Music Competition, in which he was awarded the Osaka Mayor Award for his performance in the Grand Gala. He has also won First Prize at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Hartford, Connecticut and Third Prize in the West Virginia University International Piano Competition. At the Philadelphia International Piano Competition, he was awarded the Perry and Gladys Rosenstein Recital Award for best solo repertoire performance.

At the age of 11, Hans advanced to the MTNA Young Artist Competition national finals in Chicago, the youngest to compete in the junior category. In 2017, he once again won Eastern Division in the MTNA Young Artist Competition and placed 2nd at the national finals in Baltimore. He has won first prize in the Princeton Steinway Society Competition, the SJMTA and NJMTA Young Artist Competitions, the NJMTA High School Scholarship Competition, and the West Chester University Competition. As a result of winning concerto competitions, Hans has performed with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra, the Old York Road Symphony Orchestra, the Ocean City Pops, the Northern Lights Music Festival Orchestra, and the IU Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he recently performed Bartok Piano Concerto No. 2.

Hans has performed in masterclasses with Gary Graffman, Dang Thai Son, Christopher Elton, Lydia Artymiw, Douglas Humpherys, Ching-Yun Hu, and Emanuel Ax.
