Biography

Hilda Huang

“Whoever says Hilda Huang must also say Bach” – Leipzig Bach Archive

Pianist and harpsichordist Hilda Huang began her international performing career upon receiving first prize at the Leipzig Bach Competition at 18 years of age. She debuted on the Steinway & Sons Prizewinners’ Concert Network at the Leipzig Gewandhaus in partnership with the Leipzig Bach Archive and has since been invited to perform at the Leipzig Bach Festival, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, BASF Gesellschaftshaus, and the Montréal Bach Festival.

As a young artist, Hilda’s association with Bach’s music was shared in the documentary film Bach and Friends alongside Hilary Hahn, Bobby McFerrin, and the Emerson String Quartet. Her interest in Bach’s music on the modern piano led her to the harpsichord, on which her small hands, flair for counterpoint and articulation, and energetic playing style encouraged exploration of a wide range of early music. Hilda’s orchestral debuts saw her on both modern and historical instruments, making her debut recording with Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for TELARC (2008) and appearing as soloist with Nicholas McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque.

“She has a mind that can multi-task and ears that can ‘multi-listen’” - San Francisco Examiner

Hilda Huang’s life-long immersion in global Bach-reception anchors her work as a public leader in contemporary Bach-performance, striving for the variety and precision that mark artistic authenticity. Her in-progress performance-art installation project, entitled Choosing Family, invites audience members to participate in contemporary Bach-transmission. Choosing Family was recently shortlisted for a Glenn Gould Bach Fellowship. She performs both modern and early instruments in both sacred and secular spaces, providing service music at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity and Trinity Wall Street in New York City and playing continuo organ in Emmanuel Church’s Bach Cantatas as part of the Emmanuel Bach Institute.

Hilda Huang receives musical guidance from Hung Kuan Chen, Arthur Haas, Robert Levin, Béatrice Martin, Peter Sykes, and Yi-Heng Yang. She is a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow and a Gold Award Winner of the U.S. National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts’ YoungArts Week. Yale University and the Juilliard School. She is a finalist of the 2023 Berlin Prize for Young Artists. Hilda Huang is an Astral Artist and a Steinway Artist.
