Praised for a voice of uncommon size and warmth, countertenor Hunter Shaner performs primarily in the contemporary music scene, singing either new works or avant-garde staging of existing pieces. Some recent performances include La Messaggera in The Nightsong of Orpheus, Mezzo II in The Promised End, and Joseph in Las Místicas de Mexico. Other roles include Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, Tolomeo in Giulio Cesare, and Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus. Hunter mostly performs on the concert stage, with projects ranging from standard repertoire such as Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat, and Britten’s Canticle II to newer works like Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard and Neil Clifton Cain’s Prayer of Pariah. He is currently on the voice faculty at Salisbury University.
