James Maddox Moorehead is a 21-year-old lyric baritone in his junior year at Furman University. He is currently earning a Bachelors of Music degree in Vocal Performance studying under Dr. Grant Knox.
Most recently, James was a soloist in Handel's “Messiah”, performing "Why do the Nations so Furiously Rage Together." The previous spring, he played Bob in THE OLD MAID AND THE THIEF and was in the chorus for AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS and ORPHEUS AND THE UNDERWORLD, all with Sarah Reese Lyric Theatre. He also sang the role of Marcello in LA BOHEME with the Furman University Opera Scenes program. He is looking forward to playing the role of Henry Davis in STREET SCENE with Sarah Reese Lyric Theatre in April 2026, and the title role of GIANNI SCHICCHI with Harrower Summer Opera Workshop in the summer.
James spent the summer of 2025 working at The Ohio Light Opera as a Resident Young Artist, playing the roles of Andrew MacLaren in BRIGADOON and Lord Edgar James in BITTERSWEET, as well as covering Billy Bigelow in CAROUSEL. He was also an ensemble member in TIP-TOES, CAROUSEL, and PATIENCE. The previous summer, he attended SongFest as a Young Artist, where he sang in a masterclass with Lucas Meachem and coached with composer and pianist John Musto.
Outside of music, James is an avid outdoorsman. He earned his Eagle Scout in 2022 in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, and enjoys hiking, canoeing, sailing, and dogsledding. James is also a Religion double major at Furman University.
