Biography

Janice Hall

Janice Hall is a singer and actor equally comfortable in the worlds of opera, theater, and cabaret. After a stellar beginning in the opera world, which included appearances in major roles at the Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera, and the Washington National Opera, Janice took a contract at the opera house in Cologne, Germany. While in Europe, she performed at the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna State Opera, Covent Garden in London, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and the opera houses of Hamburg, Zurich, Munich, and Berlin. Her operatic repertoire has included roles as diverse as Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, Janacek's Cunning Little Vixen, Puccini's Madama Butterfly, and Richard Strauss's Salome, and she has worked with some of the world’s great directors, including Jack O’Brien, Harry Kupfer, Willy Decker, and Calixto Bieito. She has also appeared with, among others, the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Le Nozze di Figaro), the Kurt Weill Fest in Dessau, Germany (Street Scene), the Central City Opera (Lucia, Violetta, Mimi), and seven seasons with the Santa Fe Opera, in operas by Rossini, Cavalli, and Verdi, among others. She performed as Violetta in the New York City Opera’s Emmy-winning telecast of La Traviata, directed by legendary soprano Renata Scotto, in the "Live from Lincoln Center" series on PBS. Since returning to the U.S. in 2007, Janice has broadened her scope to include theater and cabaret appearances, while still performing in contemporary opera productions. For her first solo cabaret show, Grand Illusions: The Music of Marlene Dietrich, Janice received both a Bistro and a MAC Award. She made her off-Broadway debut in 2012, in the Urban Stages production of My Occasion of Sin, and was part of the 2015 New York International Fringe Festival, appearing in the play Love at the End of Time. Recent opera performances include the 2019 New York premiere of Britten's Owen Wingrave, with Little Opera Theater of New York, and Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers with Urban Arias and Des Moines Metro Opera. She participated in the world premiere of Jorge Martin’s Before Night Falls, and is featured on the CD recording.
