Jasmine Muhammad is a versatile vocalist, bridging the gap between the opera house, the harmonic space of background vocals, and intimate recitals of art songs and spirituals. Most recently, Ms. Muhammad appeared in a series of new works produced by Kanye West and as a member of the Metropolitan Opera's ensemble of Porgy & Bess. During her three year tenure as a Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist, credits included Rodelinda in Handel's Rodelinda and Micaëla in Bizet's Carmen; the High Priestess in Verdi's Aida, First Lady in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Eliza in Muhly's Dark Sisters and Mimi in the student matinee of Puccini's La Boheme. Ms. Muhammad's work as background vocalist includes working with artists such as John Legend with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and touring with Warren Haynes on the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration Tour as well as backing vocals for Chaka Khan, Kanye West, Anthony Hamilton, Kelis, John Batiste, and more. Album credits include records by Kevin Morby, Benjamin Booker, Karen O, and Michael Kiwanuka. As a winner of the 2015-2016 Sullivan Foundation Award, her work continues as a freelance musician in New York City. A native of Reston, Virginia, Ms. Muhammad holds a Masters and Bachelors of Music degree in voice from Manhattan School of Music and Roosevelt University.
